January is Whole Child Month

Taking care of kids is the job of all of us. In Tacoma, we embrace that idea with the Whole Child approach – that all of us support kids from morning to night.

A key part of that approach is social emotional learning, which starts with building healthy relationships. Please consider taking a step in your social emotional learning by completing the first activity on the Whole Child activity calendar:

Think 5 positive thoughts about yourself today for each negative thought.

Reduced speed limits

Parents and guardians, if you have a young driver at home, please help make sure they know about new speed limits in Tacoma.

Starting January 1st, residential street speed limits will go from 25 to 20 miles per hour. The speed limit is also being lowered in some neighborhood business districts.

Lowering speeds by 5 miles per hour increases safety on the road by giving drivers more time to react.

Lincoln Science Outdoors

Our newly founded LHS Science Outdoors, in support with a grant from OSPI, will be providing numerous outdoor educational opportunities for LHS Freshman the remainder of the 2022-2023 school year. The aims of our LHS Science Outdoors program are to break down barriers that limit students’ confidence in pursuing STEM careers by providing them experiences that allow them to compete with peers who are not limited by socioeconomic status, ability, migrant status, and/or demographics. Organized by 3 LHS science teachers, a student committee, and local outdoor education facilitators our top goals are:

  1. Provide outdoor science experiences to develop student leadership and collaboration skills for students’ first year in high school creating a deeper engagement/connection with the school and local community.
  2. Provide opportunities for underrepresented science students to see themselves in the STEM fields through visits to outdoor research institutions, conducting investigations in the field, and meeting diverse local STEM professionals and/or indigenous naturalists.

Students interested in being on the planning committee can attend the informational session January 11th, 2023. in Room 215 from 2:30 to 3pm. Application deadline for the student committee will be January 13th. Regardless of attending the informational session ALL freshman students at LHS should look for more information about future outdoor science events between February and June 2023.

Please contact the LHS Science Outdoors leads for any additional information: Natalie Reszka (nreszka@tacoma.k12.wa.us) , Jennifer Holm (jholm@tacoma.k12.wa.us), and Erin Fiorini (efiorin1@tacoma.k12.wa.us).
