From upgraded school boilers and HVAC systems, to improved tracks, fields and pools, many of our schools received needed improvements over the summer.
During the break, track and field improvements started at Truman Middle School and Lincoln High School, while similar work at First Creek, Gray, Mason and Giaudrone middle schools wrapped up. The changes will allow more schools to host track and field meets on their own fields.
Safety and security improvements
All middle and high schools now have new cameras, intercom systems and entry-card badge readers. The next phase of work includes installing camera systems and access-control intercom systems at another 26 schools.
Pools, ballfield improvements
Silas and Stadium high school swimming pools were also worked on during the summer. The pools received upgrades to their mechanical systems, diving wells and pool linings, extending the life of the pools by 20-25 years. Foss, Mt. Tahoma and Lincoln pool improvements are next on deck.
Over the summer, Lincoln ballfields, tennis courts, track and field, and heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system received improvements.
Playground and accessibility improvements
Fourteen elementary schools got new playground sets and nine elementary schools will soon get new playground equipment and other improvements, for a total of 23 new playgrounds this year.
The new play structures focus on children and learning with the emphasis of structures lasting for years. Supporting the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and children with special needs are a focal point in new play areas. Perimeter fencing secures the sites. The former McKinley Elementary got a new elevator and ramp, while the Professional Development Center got new railings, ramps and concrete work.
Oakland High School students will attend school in the McKinley building this fall while their school undergoes a historic renovation.
When voters approved the 2020 construction bond, it included many of these smaller projects in addition to replacing or renovating eight aging neighborhood schools. Many projects are now complete, while others are underway or in the planning stage. All of them improve safety and learning environments for students.
