Q&A with the Class of 2024: Luisa Torres, Lincoln High School
Luisa Torres, Licoln High School Senior

Lincoln High School senior Luisa Torres has grit inside and outside of the classroom.

“Even when she gets frustrated or isn’t the best on the first try, she will keep pushing,” said Lincoln Career & Technical Education (CTE) teacher Jarred Foss.

He commended her character outside the classroom, citing the ways she engaged in student life and civic life through the Latino Club.

Torres shared this about her experience at Lincoln High School and beyond:

What are your plans for next year?

I want to apply to Bates and get my associate degree. I want to apply to Local 26 (the western Washington union for plumbers, pipefitters, steamfitters, sprinklerfitters, and service technicians) to obtain an apprenticeship position. After I gain experience, I want to pursue my dream of becoming a CWI, which is a Certified Welding Inspector. I’m looking forward to seeing what is out there outside of high school. There would still be school, but in a more real-world setting. I really like welding, so I’m excited to work in a different shop. That will be cool!

How has your school experience helped prepare you for that pathway?

I feel like the CTE classes, especially the welding classes, have helped me learn the basics when it comes to welding. Mr. Foss has provided a lot of opportunities, like taking field trips to fairs or conventions where they offer jobs, and we’re able to network with people. I did the Jobs 253 summer program called Plumbers & Pipefitters. I got to learn more about other positions outside of just structural welding.

What's a challenge you've overcome?

I’ve always struggled with speaking up for myself. I’ve always been afraid of judgment. But I feel like this CTE class specifically has helped me learn that asking questions is good. It’s always better to stay curious.

What’s an accomplishment you’re proud of?

Luisa Torres, Lincoln High School Dance

There is an afterschool club called SkillsUSA, and this year I competed in the welding category. I placed in the top 5 at the regional level for the south Puget Sound and got to compete at the state level. I was really proud of getting that far with it being only my second year welding! I was one of three girls there. We did TIG welding which was a challenge. We did a mix of stick and MIG, and we also did cutting. I am also a part of the Latino club. We did a collaboration with Tacoma Art Museum for Día de los Muertos. We also did Latino Legislative Day in Olympia, when we advocated for our community around issues of agricultural work and immigration.

What words would you use to describe yourself?

Strong, kind, and smart.
